Elegant Outdoor Summer Wedding in Ojai

Michael & Anna Costa have a way with the camera and it shows in their latest Ojai installment. It’s everything we imagine a warm-weathered affair to be. From the prettiest shady ceremony spot to a peach infused tablescape floraled by Susan Evans + coordinated by Jessica Kuipers and a reception draped in twinkling cafe lights, this is just the kind of imagery we’re craving as we head into the final days of summer.

From The Groom…Wesley and I met for the first time in September of 2009 at a BBQ in Ventura hosted by friends. I had just returned home from Florida a few days prior, and Wesley was living in Ojai finishing up her Master’s Degree. Our initial introduction was brief and it wasn’t until a couple weeks later that we would cross paths again and ultimately hit it off. We went on our first date the following day… September 27, 2009 to be exact.

The following January, I had to pack my bags and return to Florida to continue my baseball career. At the time we had only been together a matter of months, but we knew our relationship was something worth keeping. After frequent bi-coastal visits I returned home in May 2011 when I retired from baseball and came back home for good. At this point, Wesley and I were finally able to embrace an uninterrupted relationship that would continue to grow stronger as time went on.

Wesley’s Maid of Honor, Amber, and I had planned to throw her a surprise 30th birthday party. In the spirit of surprises, I decided to add another one. Wesley and I had planned on meeting her family for dinner at the Ojai Valley Inn. I convinced her that we should get there a little early to walk through one of gardens just outside of the restaurant. About 30 seconds into the garden walk my excitement/nervousness got the best of me and I stopped to read a poem for her that I claimed I had written for her birthday. What I didn’t tell her was that I had her Great Grandmother’s engagement ring in my pocket and that this poem would end in a marriage proposal! As I got to the end of the poem, my trembling knee dropped to the ground and I asked her to marry me. After a confused pause, she said yes! As scheduled, we had dinner and went back to her parent’s house for drinks. What she didn’t know was dozens of our close friends were waiting there to surprise her. And a party it was. It was a day that we will not soon forget!

From The Bride…We had over a year to plan our wedding. I grew up in Georgia but claim Ojai as my second home. I also met Ryan there so deciding to get married in Ojai was a no brainer. When we walked through Twin Peaks Ranch, I couldn’t imagine a more beautiful location to celebrate our marriage and start our life together as husband and wife. The day of our wedding was hot, but the hot Ojai days lead to amazing, warm Ojai nights. We opted to not do a first look, so we both spent most of our time before the wedding in our separate dressing rooms. I caught quick glimpses of the beautiful decor and flowers but couldn’t fully appreciate it until after the ceremony. It was like a dream! We hired a local musician to play acoustic guitar for the ceremony and our first dance. I knew that for cocktail hour I wanted to bring a bit of the south to Cali. Our appetizer were boiled peanuts and fried chicken nuggets (from chic-fil-a). Ryan and I spent all of cocktail hour taking these amazing photos and sitting back and enjoying the beauty of our wedding. The rest of the night was exactly what we wanted it to be, a big party!

Inspiration for the Littlest Members of the Wedding Party

So often we see adorable flower girls and the dapperest of ring bearers gracing the pages of SMP, and now, we have whimsical inspiration dedicated to these wee ones. From crazy cute outfit ideas to a children’s table that will surely getting a standing ovation, this shoot crafted by Whitepeacock Styled Events + Munster Rose and Liz Banfield is the true definition of charming.

From Liz Banfield PhotographyInspired by a cotton floral print from Liberty of London found in a children’s party dress by Oscar de la Renta, photographer Liz Banfield and creative powerhouse Whitepeacock Styled Events set out to capture a spring wedding design to compliment an adorable flower girl and ring bearer. The exuberant palette of pink, mango, and turquoise informed all the charming details, including a “kids-only” table featuring card games, custom name balloons, strawberry milk jars rimmed with sprinkles, macaron “pops,” and glitter cupcakes. What child wouldn’t feel special at this event? Whitepeacock also created a vibrant table skirt made of ribbons, lace trim, and pom-poms to compliment the vintage table.

Not afraid of a little DIY, a ring pillow was sewn from turquoise gingham with a contrasting mini-pom trim placed on a wood plate from Muji. The flower girl “basket” was adapted (with two drilled holes) from a coordinating wood bowl, adorned with a sweet floral trim from Daytona Braids & Trimming in NYC. Striped straws were transformed into “waving wands” with the application of ribbons.

Floral designer Jackie Reisnauer of Munster Rose updated the typical flower girl headpiece by grouping the flowers in an asymmetrical arrangement. A combination of seasonal spring blooms — Scabiosa, Garden Roses, Ranunculus, Sweet William, and Italian Ruscus — highlighted the color palette as well as the flower girl’s charming curls. For the ring bearer, a scaled down boutonniere complimented his dapper Oscar de la Renta linen jacket and plaid bow-tie.

To make the duo feel extra special, individual mini-cakes were created by Banfield using and easy fondant recipe (comprised mostly of store bought marshmallows!) found online. Miniature cookie cutters were used to cut out simple floral shapes and then topped off with a simple decorative sugar pearl.

Boho Chic Maui Wedding

A single look at this couple and you know that they are one of the most beautiful pair we’ve ever had on SMP. But look a little closer. Could it be that they are also the most in love? The joy emanating out of these images completely defines what a wedding can and should be. With photographs from Tamiz Photography and stunning florals by Opihi Love, you have no choice but to pore over the entire wedding right here and of course in the beautiful film by Sunlit Films.

From The Bride…When most people think of Maui, they think of beautiful beaches with white sand and sparkling blue waters of the Pacific, but what a lot of people don’t realize is that Maui has one of the most spectacular countryside’s I’ve ever seen.

We chose my husband’s rustic family farm in Kula, Maui to have our wedding ceremony. The lush rolling hills surrounded by spectacular views of Maui coastline below made for the perfect backdrop to say I do.

We had the great privilege and luck to work with Melissa Padilla of Opihi Love Boutique Rentals and Event design for our wedding. Our vision was one of rustic elegance with vintage touches. Cigar boxes, vintage teacups, dahlias, peonies, proteas, David Austin’s, runuculus, wax flowers, mason jars, candlelight and fire pits decorated the barn and cocktail area.

Our ceremony was an intimate affair with just our closest family members in attendance. Having lost both my parents (my mom very recently to cancer), I was apprehensive about having a big wedding knowing how emotional my sisters and I would be without our mom and dad there. It was Graham’s idea to have a small family only ceremony and dinner and follow it up with a big reception party at a later date and it was the best decision we ever made.

How wonderful it was to be able to get ready in the Monroe family farmhouse. Getting ready with my sisters was a bittersweet moment as my mother’s presence was everywhere, from the buttoning up of my lace Pronovias gown to the crowing of the haiku floral lei, I could hear her laughter and feel her love around all of us.

I had my three nieces as my flower girls, my two younger nephews as my ring bearers, and my two oldest nephews (both of which are named for their grandfathers whom they never got to meet) walk me down the aisle. I know my dad would have approved of having his grandsons step in to walk his last little girl down the aisle. It was magical to have all littlest family members involved and they kept us all smiling and laughing the entire day.

Graham picked our ceremony location to be in one of the upper pastures with beautiful views. Wooden benches, chaise lounges, and vintage chairs made up the seating for our small party and two garden chairs were placed in front for my parents so that Graham and I could lay flower leis over them in remembrance.

Taking photos while walking through the beautiful orchards with the talented husband and wife team that make up Tamiz photography, we were able to have a few quiet moments to ourselves while the afternoon sun kissed the coming dusk.

The Monroe’s working rustic barn was converted into a beautiful dinner theater with hanging floral arrangements on rustic wooden planks cascading down to vintage farm tables. Linen table runners decorated with flowers and candles made for the perfect table setting. Miss B Calligraphy created the rustic wooden signs, handmade seating cards and a unique picture menu to highlight the culinary delights of Maui Executive Catering. Pan Asian cuisine with fresh farm to table deliciousness was the perfect choice for our wedding dinner. Fresh ahi poke (a local favorite), sous vide wagyu beef, and homemade green tea ice green (the groom’s favorite) were just some of the dishes that were served to our guests.

A grownups only Scotch bar was found near the firepit and a s’more and hot chocolate bar was laid out for the kids to enjoy as the night wore on.

The evening ended by sending off wish lanterns to carry our beautiful memories, prayers and love to those who could not be there with us that day.

It was such a special day, filled with some of our most special people and we were so happy to share it with all of them.
